The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020 emphasizes that the Covid-19 pandemic situation has led to the worst economic fallout since the Great Depression. The report indicated that the pandemic pushed 71 million people back into extreme poverty and the people who suffered the most from the virus were the informal economy workers, older people, the disabled, migrants, and refugees due to socioeconomic circumstances.


The Sustainable Development Goal 1 'No Poverty' aims to end poverty in all its forms everywhere. How does Covid-19 affect the world’s poverty issue in achieving SDG Goal 1? (Poverty issue here includes deprivation of education, health, food, economic activity, etc.) Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

The Covid-19 Pandemic is causing school and educational institution closures worldwide. According to the Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020, school closures kept 90 percent of students (1.57 billion) out of school and induced over 370 million children to miss out on school meals since the outbreak. The impact of school closures was severe for disadvantaged communities, especially in the countries with insufficient technology and infrastructure necessary for remote learning. In the worst case, prolonged stay at home led to permanent school drop-outs.


The Sustainable Development Goal 4 'Quality Education' aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. How does the Covid-19 pandemic impact young students’ education rights and their educational environment in achieving the SDG Goal 4? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

Since the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, states are implementing various measures to prevent the spread of coronaviruses, such as lockdowns, curfews, quarantines, and stay-at-home orders. Some of the restrictions are legislative, meaning that individuals are forced to obey the government's action. This has heightened the tension between governments' authority to impede on individual rights in times of public emergencies and the implications for human rights and democracy.


The Sustainable Development Goal 16 'Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions' recognizes that human rights, good governance, and democracy are crucial to promoting peaceful and inclusive societies. In relation to the SDG Goal 16, what can be the factors to promote a balance between government responsibility for public safety and the protection of civil liberty and freedom amidst global health emergency? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

University Track

The Sustainable Development Goal 8 'Decent Work and Economic Growth' aims to promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. 'Sustainable Development Outlook (SDO) 2020' indicated that the Covid-19 stagnated economic growth, and the decline in Gross World Product (GWP) led to an additional significant unemployed worldwide. 'The Sustainable Development Goals Report 2020' also highlighted that the coronavirus has caused abrupt and profound changes, having an adverse impact on the world's labor markets, particularly on workers in informal employment, the self-employed, daily wage earners, and workers in sectors at the highest risk of disruption.


Discuss the challenges of worsening impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the timely achievement of the SDG Goal 8 and present your view on what should be done to address these challenges including how to address the deteriorating problems of youth unemployment.
